Atelier Heikkilä is a wooden residence and atelier for two designers in Jyväskylä, Finland. The beautiful site overlooks lake Päijänne.
The atelier is located on the footprint of the former main building at the top of the site. The spaces open up towards the lake, while the backside by the road is more closed. This contrast is achieved architecturally by wrapping the dark roof around the building: the street facade continues the surface of the sloping roof. The interior with its natural wooden surfaces is revealed in the lakeside facade.
The spaces are divided according to the same principle. The living areas are located in a large open space by the lakeside facade, while the utility rooms are located on the back zone. Above them, there is a mezzanine with the atelier and exhibition of the owners works.
